Meditation: the end of thought…
If there is any form of distortion in the mind or heart, that is, if there is any form of jealousy, envy, suspicion, fear, ambition, greed, or anger, all that stuff, then meditation becomes a type of escape from what is, which is fear. Meditation like that is a form of self-hypnosis. It may invent or see visions, God, bright colors and lovely things, but it is not true meditation.
Meditation begins by laying the right foundation, and that foundation comes through self-honesty, which brings a full self-knowing. Then there is no distortion, no deception. In this meditation the mind becomes extraordinarily quiet.
It’s the quality of silence which matters, not how you are silent.
As Tom has said, “It’s common after a meditation for the question to be asked if ‘anybody got anything’ and a bunch of hands would go up, eager to share. But what you’re really looking for is the person who has gone quiet, and maybe has a tear in their eye.”
I’ve seen it happen. There were two people crying uncontrollably, emotionally overwhelmed, completely unable to describe the beauty they had connected with.
I don’t want to say everything you think about meditation is wrong. But if you’re thinking about it, it’s wrong.
